Katie Krukenberg, MSW, LMSWFaculty MentorThis semester I had the opportunity to get to know my advisor through a more personal way. I have always looked up to Katie as a professor, so it was a privilege to get to know her as professional social worker and not just my teacher. I met Katie for coffee at the beginning of the semester just to talk and get to know each other more. The next time we met, I joined her for a meeting on ethics that she lead for other social workers in the community. This was a very great experience to be learning along side professionals. Katie had a survey from the room based on ethical questions and it was so interesting to see actual social workers inputs. The final time we met, I helped Katie do some ELA interviews over the phone. We had planned to meet one last time for the field advisor meet and greet, but unfortunately our time was cut short due to COVID-19. Overall, Katie is someone I know I can come to with any questions about anything, and I learned so much through our time together, so I was incredibly thankful that she was my mentor.

Monica Melchior, MSWProfessional MentorAs well as Katie, I was lucky enough to have two very great mentors. Right away at the mentor banquet, I felt as if Monica and I had a lot in common. Monica is the school social worker for Bismarck Public Schools. The first time we met, I came to her school and got a tour of the place, as well as discussed what her average day looks like. The second time we met, I joined Monica at a staff development day where a presenter came and talked about how important it is to be culturally aware in the classroom. We had planned to meet in March for another staff development day about community options, but it was cancelled due to COVID-19. My time with Monica was short, but Monica was a wonderful mentor, so I learned so much about her profession and what it is like being a social worker in the community.
